ANGLING WITH THE FLY
FLIES & ANGLERS OF DERBYSHIRE & STAFFORDSHIRE
“… a veritable treasury of fascinating and extraordinarily useful information!.....”
|
ANGLING WITH THE FLY is a major new publication exploring the history and development of fly fishing in Derbyshire and Staffordshire from the 17th century up to the present day. The lives and backgrounds of many famous and innovative fly-tiers are brought together for the first time in this comprehensive work, and looks at the evolution and features of fly patterns local to Derbyshire and Staffordshire, winging patterns and compares the notes and fly-dressings of noted angler-authors of the day.
But this is not a volume just dedicated to the historical aspects of fly fishing in the region, for the author has consulted a wide range of sources in his research; angling notebooks of recent anglers, and their relatives and friends, whose names have already passed into legend; rare and valuable published sources which would cost many thousands of pounds to accumulate; and contributions from noted anglers of today happy to pass on their wealth of knowledge and experience.

Numerous traditional patterns have been specially commissioned and expertly tied for illustrating the edition by Tim Thorpe of Derbyshire Trout Flies. The superb photographic skills of Terry Griffiths, editor of Flydresser, journal of the Flydressers’ Guild, have been employed to show them to full advantage as full colour double page spreads throughout the book. Nearly 150 patterns displayed in such fine detail will prove to be of considerable interest to the growing number of fly-fishers who tie their own flies. The book is also profusely illustrated with maps, historical portraits and vignettes, colour photographs and watercolours also commissioned for the edition. |

| Angling has been a major part of the author’s life for over fifty years. Born and brought up in a village near Derby, John Watson’s fascination with fishing ‘the fly’ and dressing local patterns generated an interest in the rich angling heritage of the Dove and Derwent watersheds, along with their anglers, fly-makers, water keepers and tackle makers. His meticulous research has resulted in a volume which makes a significant and lasting contribution to angling literature. He has featured in Discovery Channel’s fishing programme Tales from the Fishing Temple. | |
